Friday May 9, 2008: Bob made a lot of progress this week. He added another 5" inches to his height and a complete new set of leaves. While his bottom leaves got a bit sunburned, he is doing fine. He really likes it when we put him outside facing east at the entrance to the store for the morning. Until next week.

Must See Video: Story of Stuff

I stumbled across this video while talking to Lindsey at CarbonFund.org. I must warn you, it will change they way you look at the world! The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns, with a special focus on the United States. All the stuff in our lives, beginning from the extraction of the resources to make it, through its production, sale, use and disposal, affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues and calls for all of us to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something. It'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

Watch Bob Grow Week 4

Watch Bob Grow! While it doesn't look like Bob has made any progress this past week, take a closer look at the second photo. Bob has spent the entire week building the next set of leaves. This area is called the apical meristem. The apical meristem is a group of cells that retain the ability to continue divisions, forming new cells continuously as the plant grows. This PRIMARY growth is responsible for growth in height. Bob is just about ready to open the next set of leaves.
Until next week!
Mindwalk: The Movie (1990)
Mindwalk: This movie was released in 1990 and I must say that I had never heard of it until I stumbled across it one Saturday afternoon. The story and ideas presented have had me thinking about it since.
Plot: A US politician (Sam Waterston) visits his poet friend (John Heard) in Mont. St. Michael, France. While walking through the medeival island discussing their philosophies of life they happen upon Sonja (Liv Ullman), a scientist in recluse, who joins in their conversation. The two men listen to the ideas of this brilliant woman and discuss how her ideas can work in their own politician and poet lives.
It is not available on DVD but I found a place on Google where you can watch the movie Mindwalk for free. More info about finding it on VHS at Amazon.com
It is also on cable this month channel FLIXe. In Houston it is on COMCAST channel 170 on May 6 and May 15, 2008.
